ArtStarter focus – Amy Spiers

7 August 2012 Naomi Gall

With an artistic practice that occurs outside of a conventional gallery context, Amy Spiers cross-disciplinary work endeavors to encourage new forms of public engagement with contemporary art.

Spiers long term goal is to become an established practitioner and leader in the area of socially engaged art and to ‘urge people to critically reflect on their relationship to the world and each other.’

Fostering a strong desire to stimulate research and dialogue, the artist will be using her ArtStart year to travel to Europe, an important component of which so far has been a three month internship with a public art commissioning agency in Bristol. Her timing was perfect- coinciding with ambitious public art projects that formed part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Before heading to Bristol, Amy traveled to Germany for the contemporary art exhibition dOCUMENTA. She also has residencies planned in Berlin and Yogyakarta.

My hope is that I can secure opportunities with enough regularity so that I can enjoy dedicated periods of undisrupted, creative research and make ambitious, site-responsive new art works.
