Boot Camp

6 July 2012 Artery

Boot Camp was an initiative delivered in 2012 by the Australia Council’s Market Development section in collaboration with Independent Producers Australia (IPA).

The initiative provided intensive, three-month business coaching for emerging independent producers who were matched with highly regarded Australian producers.

The Boot Campers included:

Sam Hawker from Arts Radar matched with Christine Dunstan

Kristal Maher from Campfire Collective matched with Wendy Blacklock

Aneke McCulloch from Seesault matched with Annette Downs

Kath Papas  from Kath Papas matched with Marguerite Pepper

Dave Sleswick  from Mother Board Production  matched with Marguerite Pepper.

Hear Kristal, Kath, Dave and Sam speak about their Boot Camp experience:

Over the three months the emerging producers learnt how to manage work/life balance, define their business structures and create strategic plans for the future. They also attended the Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM) in Adelaide to network with industry peers and learn the art of selling.

The Boot Campers received recognition from the sector and have all seen flow on affects through their association with the initiative. The coaching gave the emerging producers the boost and confidence to continue juggling the precarious nature of independent producing.

The coaches were thrilled that Boot Camp acknowledged independent producing as an important part of the arts sector and developed the next generation of Australian  producers.

Special thanks go to Ian Scobie and Garey Campbell from Independent Producers Australia, Leanne de Souza from Fieldworx and Theresa Famularo from Cre8ion for their assistance with Boot Camp.
