Kaldor Public Art Projects – Thomas Demand

17 February 2012 Artery

Internationally renowned German artist Thomas Demand will present the 25th Kaldor Public Art Project in March 2012. Demand will transform a unique architectural site in the centre of Sydney to present his new works and project The Dailies. This work will be the artist’s first public art project working outside a museum environment.

Demand describes his new works as “just a glimpse that starts to create a narrative”, sometimes only by coincidence, “as if time stood still or as if it were the centre of the galaxy”. The project will include collaborations with Miuccia Prada, who has contributed a unique scent for this new environment, and US author Louis Begley (novels include: Wartime Lies, The Man Who Was Late and About Schmidt) who has developed a short story for the installation.

The Dailies will  present a public program that includes project viewings, informal talks and discussions, education and school programs, film screenings and more.

Thomas Demand has participated in the Shanghai Biennale (2006), the Venice Biennale (2005), and represented Germany in the Sao Paulo Biennale (2004); his solo exhibitions have included a mid-career retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2005) and most recently, an extensive solo show was presented at Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie (2009-2010) amongst many others; group shows include Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate Modern, London; and Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt amongst many other major international museums.
